Novasail choice : Compared with a real magnetic compass, a GPS compass measures the track of the boat. This is different from measuring the magnetic heading because of the drift of the vessel, the sea currents and the precision of the GPS. The GPS and magnetic headings are two different variables, and the GPS track can never give the magnetic heading of the vessel. During a regatta, only the magnetic heading will give accurate information to help you estimate the wind variations.
The NS3xx series has been designed for regattas, when only the magnetic heading is useful.
- Why does Novasail manufacture a magnetic compass ? (up)
Only a magnetic compass can give the magnetic heading; this is mandatory information for measuring the wind variation and defining in real time regatta tactics. This explains the popularity of the magnetic tactical compass.
A GPS compass measures the course over ground followed by the vessel. In between 2 measurements the vessel follows a track called a GPS heading. When the vessel is stopped, the GPS heading no longer exists and the displayed heading has no meaning.
The GPS heading is negatively impacted by the following factors :
- the drift of the boat
- the sea current
- the GPS precision

The Novasail choice : The speedo GPS gives the speed of the boat relative to the bottom of the sea while the standard speedo gives the speed relative to the surface. The GPS speedo is more reactive and accurate especially at lower speeds (1 to 2 knots). Therefore it can replace a standard one especially when the sea current is low.
